Abstract

669,186. Drawing rollers for spinning machines. AKT.-GES., J. J. RIETER & CIE. Aug. 6, 1948 [June 15, 1948], No. 20847/48. Class 120(ii) [Also in Group VIII] A top drawing roller assembly for drawing heads of spinning machines comprises a stationary axle having end-journals, an anti-friction bearing secured by its inner race to each of said journals, a thin-walled sleeve adapted to be mounted on and demounted from each bearing, a covering immovably secured on the outer surface of each sleeve to form an integral sleeve-and-covering structure, means to hold the sleeve on its associated bearing, yieldable against inward radial pressure provided by the resilience of the sleeve and/or cover, permitting the mounting and demounting of the sleeve-and-cover structure relative to its bearing in its proper means adapted to locate each such structure on to and from its bearing, and stop operating position. As shown, Fig. 1, a metallic sleeve 6 closed at one end and carrying an elastic covering 7 of cloth, leather, cork, rubber or synthetic material is slidably mounted at each end of an axle 2 on an anti-friction bearing 4 the inner race of which is rigidly mounted on a journal 3 of the axle. Sleeve 6 is slotted at 5 to leave resilient webs 8 which are pressed inwardly by the resilience of the covering 7 to grip the outer race of the bearing. Lugs 9 on the sleeve engage the bearing to locate the sleeve, and a disc 10 shrunk on axle 2 closes the open end of the sleeve. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, members 12 projecting through slots 11 in sleeve 6 are pressed inwardly by the covering 7 to provide stops on the side of the bearing opposite to lugs 14, but are resiliently yieldable to permit removal of the sleeve from the bearing. In other embodiments similar locking members provide stops for both sides of the bearing; or tongues formed by slitting the sleeve wall are bent over at the end and pressed by the covering 7 and by their own resilience into an annular groove in the outer surface of the bearing. In further embodiments, the sleeve is retained on the bearing by the resilient grip of inwardiy cambered webs formed by slitting the sleeve wall, or of bulges formed in the sleeve; in these latter constructions, the covering need not be elastic. In all constructions some canting movement of the roller relative to the axle is provided for either by play in the bearing (e.g. using a single race ball-bearing) or by means of a clearance between the sleeve and the bearing.
