In a refrigerator cooled by the evaporator 8 of a compression system, the cold air from which flows through passage 19 between a horizontal baffle 13 and the rear wall of the cabinet, a hinged damper 20 in the passage is controlled by a solenoid 27 so as to be closed when the compressor is inoperative and open when the compressor is operative. In Fig. 2, the solenoid 27 and the compressor motor are energized simultaneously by a thermal element 34 in contact with the evaporator. When the compressor stops, the damper 20 closes by gravity. In a modification the damper is closed by the solenoid when the compressorstops and is opened by gravity when the compressor starts. The evaporator 8 has a front door 10 condensation from which drops into a channel 12. The baffle 13 serves as a drip tray.
