Abstract

665,977. Hollow glass blocks. PITTSBURGH CORNING CORPORATION. Dec. 20, 1949 [Dec. 28, 1948], No. 32578/49. Class 56. [Also in Group X] Double glazing units are formed by taking two flat panes, one very slightly larger than the other, heating them above the critical temperature, bringing them face to face with the larger pane uppermost but not quite touching the lower pane, heating the margins of one pane to weld them to the margins of the other pane and pulling the pane having the heated margins away from the other to provide a sealed chamber c as shown in Fig 4. The pane 15 having the heated margins is vibrated relatively to the other pane 16 to fillet the margins and to form an internal U-curved section 20. The panes are preheated in a portion 21, Fig. 6, of an oven and are conveyed by a carriage 35 to an intermediate chamber 22 where they are positioned by a centring device 49 ... 61 between a pair of complementary platens 41, 42 having recesses connected to suction for holding the panes to the platens. The heating of the margins is effected by the passage of current through conducting strips which are burnt away as the temperature rises and the glass becomes conducting. The upper platen is then vibrated. After formation the units are removed by a carriage 35a and transferred to an annealing rack 71. Small apertures are provided in one of the panes through which the units may be filled with dry gas, the apertures being subsequently sealed.
