Abstract

731,976. Double-paned glazing units. LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD GLASS CO. Feb. 2, 1953 [July 25, 1952], No. 2850/53. Class 56. In the making of double-paned glazing units the bending and sealing of the edges of the spaced panes takes place while the panes are moving continuously past concentrated heaters. A unit 41 having the section shown in Fig. 9 is thus produced, the line of weld 47 being nearer one pane 39 than the other, 38, and the inner walls 43 of the side portions being substantially at right angles to the panes whilst the outer walls 44 are oblique. The lower pane 39 is carried on a rectangular framework 48, Fig. 12, and the upper pane 38, spaced from and initially overlapping the lower, is supported by stepped blocks 59 adjustably and pivotally mounted on members 55 formed on a part of the framework. The framework is continuously passed on a conveyer 32, Fig. 3, from a preheating station 33, through the bending and sealing zones A, B and then through an annealing zone C. At zone A the bending and sealing of one pair of opposite edges takes place, and at zone B the other pair of edges are similarly treated, suitable transfer devices being provided at the corners of the conveyers. During their passage through zones A and B the edges of the panes are acted on by burners 104, 105, Fig. 12, carried by units 89 formed on supports which project through the coping of the treatment chambers. As the supports 48 approach the burners the blocks 59 are automatically swung, in turn, from beneath the upper pane 38 thereby enabling the edges of that pane to bend. The movement of the supports 48 also automatically imparts to the burner units whatever aligning movement is necessary.
