Abstract
3 : 31 - Carbalkoxymethylene - bis - (4 - oxycoumarins) are manufactured by condensing 4-oxycoumarin with a bisulphite compound of an alkyl ester of glyoxylic acid, advantageously with an aqueous solution thereof obtained by oxidizing a dialkyl tartrate and extracting the reaction mixture with an aqueous solution of a bisulphite. In an example, diethyl tartrate is oxidized with lead tetra-acetate in benzene, the solution is filtered and extracted with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium metabisulphite, and the aqueous layer is separated and run into a boiling aqueous solution of 4-oxycoumarin, from which, on standing, 3 : 31-carbethoxymethylene-bis-(4-oxycoumarin) separates.
