665,281. Ratchet gearing. CLAYTON, GOODFELLOW & CO., Ltd., and HARRISON, J. Jan. 4, 1950 [Jan. 4, 1949], No. 229/49. Class 80 (iii). [Also in Groups V and XXXV] Means for altering the amount of clay fed to a brick-making machine (see Group V) includes a shaft V<SP>1</SP>. To increase the amount of clay fed the shaft is stepped around in one direction (and left in its new position) and to decrease the feed the shaft is stepped around in the opposite direction (and left there). The shaft is stepped around by one or the other of two ratchet levers T having teeth T<SP>2</SP> which engage a ratchet wheel V fast on the shaft. The levers are pivoted at T<SP>1</SP> on a frame S that rises and falls relative to the shaft, and are normally held in the inoperative position shown on the left by the bars Z of solenoids S<SP>2</SP>. When conditions change in the machine, one of the solenoids is energized, its bar is retracted, spring U pulls the ratchet lever to operative position (as shown on the right) and when frame S rises T<SP>2</SP> engages V to step the shaft around. On descent of the frame roller W engages cam surface T' to reset the lever. The actuation of the solenoids may be automatic (see Group XXXV).
