Abstract

A heating cartridge is formed by pouring a metallothermic mixture together with a non-aqueous solution of an organic binding material either into an envelope or into a mould from which it is removed on hardening. The binding material, which may form 10-25 per cent of the mixture, may be formed by dissolving collodion (preferably 1-6 per cent) in acetone, alcohol, methyl acetate or a mixture of particularly cellulose nitrate varnish, or solutions of natural and synthetic resins may also be used. Aluminium, magnesium, silicon, ferro-silicon, silico-aluminium or the residues of the electrolytic three-layer aluminium refining process may be used together with mill scale for the metallothermic mixture.
