Abstract

664,902. Machines with permanent magnets. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 8, 1949 [Dec. 18, 1948], No. 31553/49. Class 35. In orderto reducethe lossofmagnetization of a permanent magnet rotor of a dynamo when it is removed from or replaced in its stator, magnetic shunts 6 are provided in the rotor and placed between a cylindrical permanent magnet 1 which is radially polarized and polepieces 4, the iron magnetic circuit between the shunts 6 and the pole-pieces 4 being interrupted at 8. The shunts 6 are separated from the permanent magnet ends and from the polepieces 4 by felt washers 9 and by non-magnetic shims 8 respectively. To minimize any demagnetizing effect caused by sudden change in load a pair of bars 10 of non-magnetic material are axially placed so that the bars 10 and the shunts 6 form a short-circuit damping coil around the magnet 1. The output voltage of the dynamo can be adjusted by providing a ring 13 of magnetic material placed at one end of one shunt 6 but separated therefrom by shims 15 of non-magnetic material and of varying thickness.
