664,443. Sockets ; drills and cutters. GARTHWAITE, E. G., and O'HANLON, B. M. March 30, 1950 [Feb. 22, 1949], No. 4819/49. Class 83 (iii). A cutter-holding socket comprises a shank 1 provided with a driving element 8 and an externally-operable axially-displaceable cutter slide 5 which is urged upwards by a spring 10 and has means, such as a screw thread 20, for mounting an interchangeable cutter 17 by relative rotation, the driving element and cutter having positive coupling means normally kept engaged by the spring 10 but disengageable by displacing the slide downwards so that the cutter may be rotated and removed from the slide. A bore 4 of the taper shank 1 accommodates the slide 5 and the screwed boss 8, the latter having a square or elongated driving surface 15 and an alignment bore 16. The slide is moved to the extended position by an external sleeve 3 which has a pin 18 extending through slots in the socket and through the slide, each slot being of Z- shape so that a shoulder is provided to prevent the full movement to disengage the drive, if the cutter jams in the work and the feed pressure is removed. The cutter 17 has a square or elongated driving surface 21, an alignment boss 22 and also an index mark which, when fitting the cutter is aligned with a corresponding mark on the boss. A screwed pilot member 23 may be fitted to the cutter.
