Abstract

664,082. Injection moulding ceramic materials. PROJECTILE & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. July 5, 1950 [April 20, 1949], No. 10530/49. Class 87(ii) A stiff ceramic mix at normal temperature is injected into a mould which is at a temperature low enough to freeze the mix in the mould. When the moulded mix has become hard enough, it is removed from the mould. The mouldings are allowed to stand until the liquid in the mix has evaporated and are subsequently fired. The mix is fed by a plunger, Fig. 2, (not shown), from a hopper 15 through a duct 16 into the injection cylinder 12 from which it is forced into the mould by a hydraulic ram 13. The mould comprises a fixed mould block 23 with a female mould 24 and a toggle-operated mould block 25 having a male mould 26. Cooling fluid is circulated through pipes 28, 27, 30, 29 and 31. A layer of insulation 32 is provided between the block 23 and the machine frame. A thermostatic control may be provided to control the temperature of the moulds. The mix contains between 10 per cent and 30 per cent by weight of water or ethylene glycol. It preferably contains bentonite. The Specification describes three detailed examples of ceramic mixes that may be used. Each of these mixes contains bentonite, china clay, feldspar calcined alumina, and quartz: Wetting and dispersing agents may be added. The article made may be a thread guide.
