Abstract

A method of handling a package of filamentary material, e.g regenerated cellulose rayon from viscose, comprises wrapping the package with a thin fibrous sheet comprising from 7 to 70 per cent of saponifiable cellulose fibres in combination with fibres of a material which is not affected by aqueous saponifying media, the fibres being bonded together in a condition of potential unbalance, whereby washing and drying of the wrapped package, after at least partial saponification of the ester fibres in the wrapper while on the package, causes shrinkage of the wrapper thereon. The saponifying agent may be an aqueous solution of an organic or inorganic acid, or of a caustic alkali or alkali metal salt of a weak acid, or of sodium sulphide; or of ammonia or a lower alkylene diamine such as methylene or ethylene diamine. The wrapped package is subjected to treatments including a saponifying bath for the cellulose ester fibres. This may be combined with a de-sulphiding bath, which may consist of an aqueous solution of sodium sulphide and sodium carbonate. On subsequent washing and drying, the wrapper material crepes and shrinks with the contents.
