Electro-dialysis apparatus comprises an anode compartment, a cathode compartment, and an intermediate compartment for the liquid to be treated, separated by diaphragms from the other compartments, means being provided for supplying running liquid to the electrode compartments so that it is distributed uniformly therein. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an electrode 2 forms the back wall of a, compartment into which rinsing liquid is supplied by way of pipe 6 and three branches 4 perforated along their length. The liquid flows from the perforations in a direction parallel to the surface of the diaphragm 1. The liquid, together with any gas formed, escapes through an opening 7. In a modification the liquid escapes at the sides of the compartment and the gas at the top, and the supply of liquid may be downwardly through the branch pipes. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the compartment containing the electrode 2 is open at the top and has hollow side walls formed with holes 15 for entry of rinsing liquid. Instead of the holes 15 a vertical slit may be provided. In a further modification the electrode 2 is perforated or formed with slits, the rinsing liquid being supplied to a space at the back of the electrode and passing through the openings towards the diaphragm. In the construction shown in Fig. 11, the rinsing liquid is fed to a compartment through pipes 20 which serve as the electrode. The diaphragm is supported by vertical strips 21 placed against the tubes 20. Specification 659,494 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to pipes and frames made of rubber. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
