Abstract
663,163. Screwdrivers. GUEST, KEEN & NETTLEFOLDS (MIDLANDS), Ltd. Dec. 15, 1947 [Dec. 30, 1942], No. 33059/47. Class 61 (iii) [Also in Group XXV] Relates to screwdrivers for wood or machine screws of the type in which the heads have a central tapered recess for wedging engagement with a driver, and laterally extending slots to engage torque transmitting wings thereon, and consists in providing the wings 33 of the bit with clearance from the sides 18 and ends 19 of the grooves 14, of about 0-001 inch, before the torque is applied. The side walls 18 of the grooves 14 converge outwardly at an angle of from two to four degrees as defined by their intersections 25 with a plane perpendicular to the axis. The walls 18 also converge downwards from the surface of the head so as to include an angle of from eight to ten degrees as measured in a plane at right angles to the centre plane of the groove and parallel to the axis. The walls 22 defining the ribs between the groove converge downwards at a small angle such that the bit 35 will wedge between them without bottoming so that the screw may be introduced by the bit into holes difficult of access.
