Abstract
662,071. Wheel disc brakes. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. March 16, 1949 [Nov. 26, 1948], No. 7225/49. Class 103 (i). In a combined wheel and disc brake, particularly for an aircraft, the wheel, which is in two halves 15, 16 removably secured together by lugs 19, rotates on bearings 12, 13 carried on the peripheries of two flanges 2, 3 rigidly secured to the fixed axle 1. The brake, which is contained by the space between the two flanges 2 and 3, comprises rotating discs 26, 27 keyed to the lugs 19 and engaged with fixed sets of friction pads 33, 34, 35, 36 by means of three circumferentially spaced hydraulic pistons and cylinders 37, 38. Each piston and cylinder includes an automatic wear adjustment mechanism comprising a plate 39 with a spindle 40 subject to the action of a friction packing ring 43, which is engaged by means of a spring- pressed spacer sleeve 45, so as to be moved by the latter when the brake is applied, the plate and spindle 39, 40 remaining in their new position to set the clearance when the brake is released.
