Abstract
661,101. Propelling pencils. ASPREY & CO., Ltd., HOLLIDAY, S., and HAMPTON, D. B. April 11, 1949 [May 20, 1948], No. 13740/48. Class 146 (iii). A propelling pencil adapted to use leads of varying sizes comprises a body portion having firstly, an adjustable point section provided interiorly with a chuck having contractile jaws to receive leads and, secondly, propelling mechanism for propelling leads through the opening provided by the jaws, the size of which opening can be adjusted by rotation of the point section. The pencil comprises a detachable point section A, Fig. 1, screwed to a barrel B. The point section A is provided with a chuck 1 having contractile jaws 2 provided with an opening 3 the size of which may be adjusted to receive varying sizes of leads by screwing or unscrewing the point section A on or off the barrel B. A ring 4 in engagement with one of the threads 5 of the point section A limits the upward displacement of the chuck 1 which is pressed upwardly by the mouth 3<SP>1</SP> of the point section A engaging the jaws 2, such upward pressing action being assisted, if necessary, by manual pressure on the projecting portions of the jaws 2. The lead is carried in a socket S' secured to a screwed propelling member C which may be projected or retracted by rotation of a head H relatively to the barrel B. In a modification, Fig. 2, the point section A is screwed to a threaded portion 11 of a sleeve member 1<SP>11 </SP>formed with a chuck 1. An intermediate section 10 disposed between the joint of section A and the barrel B is free to rotate relatively to either of these members. Rotation of the point section A relatively to the intermediate section 10 causes the point section to be screwed on or off the portion 11 thus adjusting the size of the opening 3. The sleeve member 1" is permitted to move longitudinally of the section 10, movement in the outward direction being against the action of a spring 30. The section 10 carries a pin 21 engaging a slot 22 in a collar 23, the slot allowing limited axial movement of the sleeve member 1" relative to the section 10. The collar may be formed separately from or integrally with the sleeve member 1<SP>11</SP>, the collar 23 being fastened to the member 1" by a pin 25 if formed separately. Rotation of the barrel B relatively to the portion 10 causes a plunger 15 connected by means of a pin 16 passing through slots 17 in the sleeve member 1" to a collar 18 engaging screw threads 19 in the barrel B to be projected or retracted relatively to the barrel B to advance the lead or permit it being returned manually. In a further modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the plunger 15 is secured by a pin-and-slot connection to a sleeve portion which encloses an extension of the plunger 15. The sleeve portion terminates in spring jaws which carry a lead so as to advance or retract it, the lead being held by the chuck 1. When a shoulder on the sleeve portion reaches an annular rib on the sleeve member 1<SP>11</SP> during the projection of a lead the sleeve portion is arrested, but the extension of the plunger 15 continues to advance to expel and release the lead.
