Abstract

1302191 Crutches ELLIS SON & PARAMORE Ltd 21 April 1970 [14 Feb 1969 9 May 1969] 8190/69 and 23845/69 Heading A5R [Also in Division E2] A forearm crutch consists of a hand-grip 12, an arm 16 upstanding from the hand-grip, a stump 18 depending from the hand-grip, said hand-grip, arm and stump being formed as a monolithic plastics moulding 10, a swivel band 22 pivotally secured, for example by means of a rivet 24 passing through a hinge member 20 and hinge leaves 26 on band 22, to the upper end of arm 16, and a leg 30 secured to the stump. The stump 18 is provided with a bore 28 to receive telescopically leg 30 which may be locked in position relative to the stump by a securing means 34. On securing means, Fig. 2 (not shown), consists of a resilient sleeve (36) held between the lower edge of stump 18 and a compression ring (38) of a thimble 40 which when screwed on to the stump 18 compresses sleeve (36) causing it to grip leg 30. A second securing means, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), consists of a rectangular thread (50) on leg 30 and a corresponding internal thread within bore 28. Leg 30 is screwed into stump 18 and secured by inserting a strip (54) through an aperture (56) in stump 18 and along a slot (58) formed in the internal surface of said stump and one of two longitudinal slots (60) formed along leg 30. A third securing means, Figs. 6-9, (not shown), consists of a lug (68) at the upper end of leg 30, which is slidable in a longitudinal groove (70) in the stump 18 which has lateral axially spaced slots (72) which receive said lug in a bayonet-like manner. A spring- loaded plunger (74) engages with a slot (76) in leg 30 to prevent rotation of the leg when it is in the desired position. In a fourth securing means, Figs. 10-13, (not shown), a strut member (80) extends axially along bore 28 and has a head (84) held in place by a shoulder (86) and a part (96), and has a peg (98) which projects through a slot (100) in a cover (90), by which peg the strut may be rotated over a limited angle about its longitudinal axis. The upper end (102) of a leg (130) has an octagonal cross-section and the bore of the stump is correspondingly formed. The leg 130 has a bore (106) which has oppositely disposed projections (108). The leg is inserted in the stump to the required degree and strut member (80) is rotated bringing segments (82) which are formed on said strut member, into a position between projection (108) thereby securing leg (130) in position. The handgrip 12 may be provided with recesses 48 or other means for securing a pad thereto.
