Abstract

660,153. Regulating. BOWLER, H. P., and SIDNEY, D. L. Jan. 10, 1950 [Jan. 19, 1949], No. 1531/49. Class 7(vi) The speed of an engine driving the generator of an arc welding plant is controlled by a bellows 12 operated by pressure fluid under the control of a valve 9 actuated by an electromagnet 7 having its energizing coil 8 in the welding circuit. For a Diesel engine the bellows 12 is connected to the control rod 15 of the injection pump 3 and the pressure fluid comprises fuel oil supplied by a pipe 22 from a pipe 19 through which a feed pump 2 supplies the pump 3. During welding the valve 9 is raised to an upper seat 10 to cut off the pressure from the pipe 22 and to release the pressure in the bellows through a pipe 23 leading to the fuel tank 1, whereby the bellows collapses and the rod 15 is moved to increase the engine speed to its normal load value. When welding ceases, the valve 9 drops to its seat 11 and the pressure from pipe 22 expands the bellows 12 to reduce the engine speed, the rate at which this occurs being controlled either by a valve 5 in the pipe 22 or by a dash pot 17. The bellows 12 may alternatively control an air or mixture throttle valve and, if the tank 1 is high enough, the static pressure head thereof may be used to uperate the bellows 12; alternatively it can be operated by the lubricating oil pressure.
