Abstract

658.898. Resilient mountings. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and COOPER, D. H. D. April 21, 1949, No. 10552. [Class 108(iii)] A resilient mounting comprises a base plate 1 and a support 2, resiliently connected thereto by a plurality of resilient elements 3, each formed of an endless length of material of substantially constant cross section, symmetrically disposed on the circumference of a circle, the elements being inclined to the base plate, so that the inclined axes, these being the minor axes of the elements when the latter are of greater length than breadth, meet when produced in a point lying on the axis of symmetry of the mounting. In the arrangement shown, the angle of inclination of each element to the base plate is approximately 35 degrees. The mean of the radii of the pitch circles at which the elements 3 are secured is substantially equal to the radius of gyration of the load to be supported. Weights may be secured beneath the plate 2 to bring the centre of gravity into the required plane and the radius of gyration of the load to the required value. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), each resilient element comprises two semicircular rubber arcs of circular cross section, bonded to the ends of a pair of steel rods to form a substantially oval element. In an alternative arrangement, the inclined axes of the three elements meet in a point on the axis of symmetry of the mounting on the side of the base plate remote from the support plate. Spiral springs formed into a substantially oval shape or a spring metal strip may be used in place of the rubber or rubber-and-metal elements referred to above.
