Abstract

658,461. Broaching; burnishing; making turbines. LAPOINTE MACHINE TOOL CO., Ltd. (Lapointe Machine Tool Co.). Sept. 14, 1949, No. 23760. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A burnishing device comprises several burnishing elements 12 mounted in longitudinal alignment on a body 15 longitudinally slidable with respect to the work. The elements are mounted in openings in a stand 10 which has a longitudinal notch 41 on one side and the stand is held in a channel 14 in the body by a clamping bar 35. The bevelled edge of the clamping bar extends into an annular groove 52 in the shank of each element so that they are secured against axial displacement but are free to rotate, in order to distribute wear. The burnishing elements may be mounted in a broach for forming the blade grooves in a turbine rotor, the broach having a pilot member 20, a set of roughing cutters 21, a set of cutters 24 for chamfering the outer edges of the groove and a set of finishing cutters 27. Fixed abutments 30 and 31 are fitted at the ends of the channel 14 and locking blocks 22 and 23 are fitted between the sets of cutters; clampbars 32 similar to the bar 35 retain the cutters in the channel.
