Abstract
658,290. Controlling electrically-propelled vehicles. SMITHS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, Ltd., and HEYMAN, H. W. Aug. 24, 1948, No. 22293. [Class 79 (v)] In a hydraulic braking system of an electrically propelled vehicle an electrically operated hydraulic valve is provided and the valve is interlocked with the motor control mechanism so that either the motor cannot be started whilst the valve is energized or the valve is de-energized on the motor being started, the valve being energized at will by the driver as an additional safety device to lock the vehicle brakes when required and the valve is of the kind actuated by a solenoid to prevent liquid flow and spring loaded when the solenoid is not actuated to permit liquid flow. As shown the invention is applied to an electrically propelled vehicle in which the wheels f, g are controlled by hydraulically operated brakes from a pedal e through a master cylinder c and a pipe b, the rear wheels g being also controlled by mechanically operated brakes through cables j from a hand lever h. Included in the pipe b is the electrically operated hydraulic valve a, the actuating solenoid a<SP>1</SP> of which is connected through a circuit m to a battery k<SP>1</SP> carried by the vehicle, the battery also supplying power to circuits p of the vehicle lights and auxiliaries. The motors of the vehicle are supplied with power through a circuit r from another vehicle-carried battery k. The circuits r, m are controlled by a switch s having a pair of coupled contacts t, t<SP>1</SP> and operated by the brake pedal e or by the driver by hand or foot so that the circuits r, m are not completed simultaneously, the vehicle being able to run free without either circuit being made. Energization of the solenoid a<SP>1</SP> locks the brakes in their " on position and may operate a warning light u. In a modification the current for the valve circuit is supplied through the motor control mechanism so that the valve can only be energized when the motor controller is in its " off position, depression of the pedal applying the brakes and energizing the valve and the valve being de-energized when the motor controller is moved to an "on" position.
