Abstract

Carbon is prepared from pitches, tars or asphalts by treating them with a volatile solvent, removing the suspended solid (primary "free carbon"), removing the solvent from the filtrate, distilling the solid residue, adding a volatile solvent to the distillation residue and removing the suspended secondary "free carbon" from the liquid. Further similar cycles may be effected.ALSO:Asphalt from the distillation of coal tar or crude petroleum is treated with a volatile solvent the suspended solid is separated from the liquid by filtration or centrifugal action, the solvent is removed from the liquid and the solid residue is distilled leaving a secondary asphalt. This secondary asphalt is treated with a volatile solvent and the suspended solid removed the liquid as before-the removed solid being substantially free from mineral matter and being known as secondary "free carbon". In an example, coal tar pitch is treated with solvent naphtha.
