657,038. Broaching helical gears &c. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. March 9, 1949, No. 6371. Convention date, May 17, 1948. [Class 83 (iii)] A method of broaching helical parts consists in forcing an elongated broach 35 through a workpiece W, and effecting a positive relative rotation until teeth are partly formed in the work-piece, the broaching then being completed to full depth with the relative rotation controlled solely by the inter-engagement between the broach and work. In a machine for broaching internal gears, the broach 35 is moved by hydraulic means having a fixed piston 14 and is detachably secured to a member 25. The latter member 25 is itself 'detachably secured to a freely rotatable collar 23 and is provided with a helical guide portion 30. The guide portion coacts with fixed nuts 43, 44 which are adjustable to take up backlash.
