Abstract

655,521. Brakes. DOEBELI, A. Nov. 17, 1948, No. 29887. Convention date, Sept. 23. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a double clutch or clutch-brake combination for selectively connecting a rotary shaft 7 to either of two oppositely rotating members or to a rotating member 1 and a stationary braking member 6, wherein auxiliary electromagnetic clutches 2, 6 have an interposed common axially free driven armature 5, rotation of which applies the selected main clutch 4 or brake 4<SP>1</SP> through torque-applied axial camming action of caged balls 16 in corresponding sets of coned recesses, the coned recesses in at least one of the co-operating pairs of each clutch, e.g. in the two presser-plates 10, 11 (as shown), or in the common armature 5, are formed in inserts 101, 11<SP>1</SP> which are freely slidable in circumferential slots, e.g. 10<SP>11</SP>, in the supporting member 10, 11, the co-operating recesses being formed directly in their supporting member (e.g. 5) or in inserts 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP> immovably carried thereby, and the slots 10<SP>11</SP> of one member 10 extend in the opposite direction from those in the other member 11. Thus, when either auxiliary clutch 2, 5 or 5, 6 is engaged to pilot the corresponding main-clutch 4 or brake 41, the coned inserts 10<SP>1</SP> or 11<SP>1</SP> of the required clutch or brake are driven by the rotation to the end of their slots in the appropriate direction and thereafter support torque-reaction to produce camming of their balls 16 and engagement of the corresponding main clutch 4 or brake 41, whilst at the same time the coned inserts 11<SP>1</SP> or 10<SP>1</SP> of the other clutch or brake are taken to the opposite ends of their slots and remain quite free of torque-reaction in the particular direction, so that this clutch or brake does not also engage. This arrangement operates for only one direction of rotation of the driving member, shown as a pulley 1. For rotation in the opposite direction the clutch and brake presserplates 10, 11 are removed and replaced with their opposite sides facing the corresponding adjacent members so that the insert-slots 10<SP>11</SP> are now oppositely directed. Common compression springs 14 effect disengagement. Single friction surfaces having conical concentric facial grooves may be used for the main clutches and the driving members may be toothed wheels or pulleys in marine or machine tool reverse gears. Overload causes slip in the auxiliary electromagnetic clutches without increasing the axial loading of the main clutches. The clutches may operate dry or in an oil-bath.
