Abstract
Magnesium metal is introduced into cast iron by bringing molten iron into contact with magnesia or a magnesia-generating compound at temperatures above 1650 DEG C or with a mixture containing magnesia and silicon at temperatures above 1100 DEG C. The added mixture may contain magnesia, lime and silicon (or ferrosilicon in approximately stoichiometric proportions), together with a binding agent and an accelerator, namely, a halide such as magnesium chloride, calcium fluoride or magnesium fluoride. The mixture may be used in the form of briquettes which are held under the surface of the melt. The method may be applied to the desulphurizing of cast iron or for producing a grey cast iron in which free carbon is present wholly or predominantly in the nodular form. In the latter case the amount of magnesium added is more than enough to reduce the sulphur content of the cast iron below 0.02 per cent, the excess being retained in the cast iron. A graphitizing agent may be added to ensure the production of a grey cast iron hypereutectic in relation to carbon. Specification 645,862 is referred to.
