654,143. Centrifugal pumps. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE POUR LA SEPARATION, L'EMULSION ET LE MELANGE PROCEDES, S. E. M. Nov. 25, 1946, No. 34966. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1945. [Class 110(i)] [Also in Group II] In apparatus for mixing or emulsifying pulverulent or pasty substances of the kind wherein an intense movement of the material is obtained by a centrifugal pumping member operating therein, the pumping member comprises a frusto-conical diffuser open at both ends and having a perforated side wall through which the material is constantly urged outwardly against a fixed surface in closely spaced relation thereto. The mixer 2 comprises a stationary tube 5 carried by a motor 6 and provided with one or more adjustable ports 12. The tube carries at its lower end a longitudinally adjustable frustoconical member 7 inside which the frustoconical member 9 is rotated by means of the shaft 10 driven by the motor, the shaft being free to flex laterally. The member 9 on rotation expels the material outwardly through the holes therein and thence through holes in the member 7, circulation occurring, as indicated, in the vat 1 and material re-entering the pumping member through the ports 12 and the opening in the diaphragm 11. An electric heater may be incorporated in a tubular sleeve 8. In a modification, two frustoconical members arranged base to base are carried by the same shaft and are housed inside two stationary frusto-conical members carried by two tubes located one above and one below the cones.
