Abstract

653,984. Treating sewage sludge. PORTEOUS, W. K. Aug. 20, 1948, No. 22052. [Class 111] [Also in Group XII] Appartus for the treatment of sludge of organic origin such as sewage sludge or peat sludge comprises a heat exchanger C formed of a number of vertical runs of inner and outer pipes T, S, a heater H for raising the temperature of the sludge to the conditioning temperature and a conditioning zone also formed of a number of vertical runs of pipe M. As shown, the influent sewage sludge is pumped from a disintegrator D by a pump P through the outer tubes S of the heat exchanger C through the inner tubes T of which passes the hot treated sludge from the conditioning zone M via pipe N to raise the temperature of the influent sludge to about 300‹F. The heated sludge is then further heated to the conditioning temperature of about 370‹F in the unit H which consists of vertical runs of pipes R enclosed in a chamber K through which heating gases or steam passes. The heated sludge then passes to the conditioning pipes M which may be enclosed in a heating chamber similar to chamber K or may be suitably lagged to maintain the temperature, and thence to the cooling tubes T of the heat exchanger C which discharges into decanters G.
