Abstract

653,398. Electron multipliers. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 31, 1947, No. 29063. [Class 40 (vi)] In an amplifier using an electron multiplier, in which the secondary emission electrode 6 requires a positive potential for operation but passes a negative current and the working potential is derived from the current flowing in a load impedance 18, operation is initiated from a source of positive potential over a device such as a gas-discharge tube 19. The current in the tube is discontinued or substantially reduced when the current in the load 18 is sufficient to maintain the electrode at working potential. As shown, the valve 1, which may be of the type described in Specification 601,966, [Group XL (a)], comprises an H.F. amplifying stage in a television receiver, in which the secondary-emission electrodes of similar preceding stages are also connected to the load 18 via lead 33. The load 18 is utilized as a source of positive potential for an amplifying stage 27, line and frame oscillators 31, 32, a sound reproducer 25 and by means of an adjustable tap, as a source of bias potential for the control electrode of the tube 29. The starting device may alternatively comprise a condenser, Fig. 2 (not shown), the time-constant with the load 18 being made long enough to maintain the secondary emission electrodes at a positive potential until the working condition is attained.
