[Class 146 (iii)] In a fountain pen in which the writing unit 1 is retractible within an outer casing 6 and provided with a closure cap 85 to seal the casing at the writing end thereof, the writing unit is secured to a cap 5 to which is secured a tubular member 7 cut away at its lower end to form a half-tube 72 adapted to fit against a second half-tube 82. The half-tube 82 forms part of a member 8 having a lower tubular portion 81 on which is pivoted the closure cap 85. A lug 87 on the cap 85 engages in a recess in a fixed sleeve 9, whereby, on turning the cap 5, the half-tube 72 imparts rotation to the member 8 and causes the closure cap 85 to uncover the end of the casing 6. The half-tube 72 has a pin 73 which engages a slot in the sleeve 9 shaped to allow limited rotation of the half-tube by the cap 5 first to operate the closure cap 85, and then to allow the writing unit 1 to be ejected from the casing by a spring 10. The spring 10 is arranged between semi-rings 74, 84 on the half-tubes ; these semirings have shallow screwthreads formed on their outer surfaces so that the spring can be mounted in operative position by a threading or screwing action. During writing, the unit 1 is supported axially solely by the spring 10. The unit 1 is readily removable simply by unscrewing the head 3 from the .cap 5.
