Abstract
652,964. Locks. CONCRETE UTILITIES, Ltd., and MARQUES, C. A. Oct. 4, 1948, No. 25743. [Class 44] In a lock, e.g. for the door closing a cavity in a concrete lamp post, and of the kind operated by a key having a pivoted arm, the arm is retained in the position at right angles to the key shank either by means provided on the arm or by means on the latch operating member. Fig. 1 shows a key for use in a horizontal position, the arm 17 being pivoted to the shank 16 and having an extension 17a adapted, when the arm is turned to withdraw the latch as in Fig. 4, to abut the inner face of the latch body 11 so that the door may be pulled open by means of the key handle 15. The key is passed through the key-hole with the arm in line with the key shank, the arm falling under gravityinto a vertical position when fully inserted. During this movement the end 17a of the arm passes through a radial slot 11d in thekey-hole. The latch 12 is mounted in a blind socket in the body 11 and shot by a spring 14. A peg 13 screwed into the bolt projects through a slot in the body for engagement by the arm 17. It may leave a turned down portion13a adapted to retain the arm at right angles to the key shank instead or in addition to the extension 17a. The slot 11d has a chamfered entrance for easy withdrawal of the key. The peg 13 may merely comprise a taper-headed screw entering a threaded hole in the latch. In another form, to reduce the length of the arm 17 the latch body is cut away over a quadrant the arm being adapted to engage in a notch in the latch itself. Fig. 8 shows a key adapted for use in a vertical position, the arm 17 being projected by a push rod 20 abutting a step 17a in the end of the arm. The rod is formed with a handle 20a and is slightly bent at 20b.
