Abstract

652,479. Resilient mountings; vibration dampers. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., June 5, 1948, No. 15250. [Class 108(iii)] A resilient mounting comprises a base member, a coaxial displaceable member resiliently connected thereto and adapted to oscillate along the common axis of the two members and damping means comprising a friction surface resiliently connected to one of the members and a complementary friction surface associated with the other member, the friction surfaces being parallel to each other and inclined to the common axis and being spaced apart but adapted to make frictional contact if a predetermined amplitude of oscillations is exceeded. In the arrangement shown, a flanged tubular member 15 is supported, through a bonded rubber annulus 18, on a central tube 7, carried by a cylindrical base member 1. A plurality of metal segments 11 which are bonded between their adjacent faces, and to the member 15 through a rubber member 14, are provided with inclined outer friction surfaces 13 which lie parallel to and, for normal vibrations are spaced from, a complementary inclined inner surface 6 of the base member 1. The tube 7 is adjustable relative to the base member 1, to vary the space between the friction surfaces. In another arrangement (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the base member and segments are each provided with a pair of axially disposed opposing frusto-conical complimentary friction surfaces by which excessive amplitude vibrations are damped during relative movements of the base member and flanged tubular member, in either direction. In a modification of this arrangement, the segments are divided circumferentially into two equal parts and have rubber bonded between them. In both arrangements the friction surfaces may be of impregnated asbestos and the bonded rubber may be a synthetic rubber composition preferably of an oil-resistant type. The friction surfaces may be other than frusto-conical, e.g. pyramidal.
