[Classes 29 and 123(ii)] Steam is generated by a heat pump comprising two or more refrigerating systems in cascade using refrigerants of different boiling points, the evaporator of one cooling the condenser of another and the compressors being driven by an internal combustion engine or gas turbine the waste heat of which is used to supplement the heat derived from the low-temperature source. Compressed refrigerant vapour from the low pressure cylinder 1A of the two-stage compressor 1 passes by a pipe 4 to an interstage cooler 6 and thence by a pipe 7 to the high pressure cylinder 1B whence it passes by a pipe 8 to the primary condenser comprising annular headers 9, 11 connected by a ring of vertical tubes 10 in an annular cylinder 12 containing water and forming the evaporator of the secondary refrigerating system. Condensed refrigerant is collected in a vessel 15 and passes through a precooler 17 and pipe 18 to a vessel 19 under the control of a float valve 20. From the vessel 19 the refrigerant is fed to a flooded primary evaporator 22 through which the liquid or gas forming the source of low temperature heat is circulated by pipes 22a, 22b. Vaporized refrigerant returns to the compressor 1 by pipe 23, vessel 19, pipe 25, precooler 17 and pipe 3. Water is vaporized in the cylinder 12 by the condensation of the refrigerant and the steam rises to a chamber 13 and passes by a pipe 34 to a compressor 33 which delivers the compressed and superheated steam to a secondary condenser 37 within the annular cylinder 12. The condenser tubes 37 extend between headers 36, 38 and are surrounded by water to form the steam raising unit Condensed water from the header 38 is collected in a vessel 40 and supplied to the chamber 13 whence it passes by a pipe 43 to the secondary evaporator 12. The feed water for the steam raising unit is contained in a float controlled tank 45 and passes by a pipe 49 to the interstage cooler 6, where it is heated, and by a pipe 50 to a boiler feed pump 51 which delivers it through a non-return valve 53 to a heat exchanger 54 through the tubes of which pass the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine 2. The water space of the heat exchanger 54 is connected with the water space around the secondary condenser tubes 37 by pipes 57, 58 the water level being controlled by a float switch 59. The cooling water from the jacket of the engine 2 passes through pipes 27 in the interstage cooler 6 to heat the feed water passing therethrough. A tank 30 keeps the cooling water system filled, being connected with the jacket by a thermostatically controlled valve 32. The steam raised by the secondary condenser 37 passes to a storage drum 62 and through pipe 63 to the place of utilization, from which condensate returns through pipe 47 to the feed water tank 45.
