Abstract

651,664. Electrolytic cells. BENNETT, A., PRINCE, D. H., EDWARDS, G. E., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 4, 1948, No. 15110. [Class 41] All the anodes or a group of anodes of an electrolytic cell of the flowing mercury cathode type are adjustable simultaneously by means of one or more rigid carriers adapted to have their position adjusted in the vertical direction, the anodes being connected to the carrier by means of electrically-conducting rods or tubes which pass through apertures in the cell cover and are flexibly sealed to the edges of the apertures. In the construction shown, each anode 1 is attached to tubes or rods 2 which are connected to carrier rods 3. T-bars 4 secured to the rods 3 are formed at their ends with holes engaging pillar bolts 8. Flexible diaphragms 6 seal the rods 2 to the edges of apertures in the cell cover 5. In an alternative arrangement a flexible seal extends around the periphery of the cell lid, and the joints between the anodesupporting rods or tubes and the apertures in the cell cover are made gas-tight with non- flexible sealing. Specifications 597,387, 597,440 and 605,790 are referred to.
