Abstract

1333289 Mercury cell ELECTRONOR CORP 2 Nov 1971 [18 Jan 1971] 50908/71 Heading C7B A flowing mercury cathode electrolytic cell has open work anodes separated from the mercury cathode by a gap through which electrolyte flows, some of the anodes having baffles placed upstream to direct the flow of electrolyte through the gap. The baffles may be supported on the anodes, the anode conductor bars or on the cell wall. The bafflers may be vertical or set at an angle to the electrolyte flow. The cell may have a flexible cover supported by the baffles. The anode may be a valve metal coated with a platinum group metal, a platinum group metal oxide or a mixture of the platinum group metal oxide and an oxide of titanium or tantalum. The anodes may be arranged in rows extending across the direction of flow and the baffles may be provided upstream of alternate rows. In the anode of Fig.4 the working face 2 is attached to a lattice of primary conductor bars 4 and secondary conductor bars 3. Current is supplied via lead-ins 5 which may have protective sheaths 7a. The baffle plate 25 has lips 26 for supporting the cell cover. The cell is particularly suited to chlorine manufacture.
