Abstract

651,449. Turbine and compressor blades. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Nov. 25, 1948 No. 30655. [Class 110(iii)] A blading element for compressors or turbines comprises a blade portion 34a extending from a supporting stem 34c which has a root 28 at its end remote from the blade portion, the blade portion and the supporting stem being so formed that they tend to be twisted in opposite directions by aerodynamic loads on the blade. The stem may be of T-, V-, L-, C-, or channel-section, the flexural axis X of which is on the opposite side of the aerodynamic axis X of the blade section to the flexural axis Y of the blade section. Blade platforms 34b between the blade and stem portions form a peripheral wall for the working fluid. A spring strip 39 attached to the stem portion and bearing at its free end on the rear face of the blade platform 34b may be provided to effect frictional damping of the vibrations of the blade portion. Alternatively, a wire 41 threaded through holes in the stem portions 34c may be used. The root may be of the fir-tree or pin-and-lug type.
