Abstract

586,573. Air compressors. SMITH. D. M., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1943, No. 16656. [Class 110 (i)] Air which is blown off from an axial-flow compressor, to avoid stalling at low speeds, is discharged through convergent-divergent nozzles whereby the fraction of the total air which is blown off decreases rapidly with increase in the pressure ratio of the compressor. Two nozzles 1a, 2a, discharging from spaced points in a compressor may be arranged in series, as shown in Fig. 3. In this arrangement, discharge from the lower pressure point ceases when the pressure ratio rises sufficiently. In Fig. 4, the nozzle 1b is situated axially and air vented out of the compressor at 7 passes through a bladed rotor 8 on its way to the nozzle. Air from the nozzle, as well as from the rotor 8, may be used for cooling purposes. Specification 586,565 is referred to.
