Abstract

651,134. Resilient mountings. METALASTIK, Ltd., GOLDSMITH, M., HIRST, A. J., and CHAMBERS, R. N. Feb. 20, 1948, No. 5030. [Class 108 (iii)] A resilient bush comprises a rubber sleeve with a flange or abutment means at one end and a reinforcing insertion bonded in the surface of the rubber of the bush, or just within the surface thereof, over an area including the inner face of the flange or abutment means, or a portion thereof and the angle between the flange and the remainder of the bush, so as to assist the rubber in this area of stress concentration. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, a rubber sleeve 12 the outer surface of which may be slightly conical and having a flanged portion 13 is bonded to a flanged metal sleeve 10. A canvas or other suitable textile sleeve 14 is bonded to the rubber sleeve 12 in the angle of the flange, preferably during the process of bonding the rubber to the sleeve 10. In another arrangement, Fig. 5, in which the outer end face of a flange 17 of a cylindrical rubber sleeve 16 may be bonded to a metal plate or washer 18 a thin metal reinforcing ferrule 19 is bonded to the rubber in the angle of the flange thereof during the moulding operation. As applied to an eye mounting of a vehicle spring, Fig. 6 (not shown), two of the rubber sleeves of Fig. 5 are loaded under axial compression in the spring eye by a bolt connecting a link at each side of the eye. The reinforcing material may consist of woven wire fabric. According to the Provisional Specification, reinforcement comprising a comparatively elastic fibre such as rayon is preferable where such reinforcement is used at the inner periphery of the bush. Perforations through which the rubber may project, may be provided in the flange 11 or washer 18 or the rubber may be moulded as a thin skin over the outer face of the flange or washer.
