Abstract

650,028. Fuel-injection pumps. FRENCH, L. O. Jan. 15, 1947, No. 1367. [Classes 7(iii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXVIII] The stroke of a fuel injection pump comprising a stationary plunger 33, Fig. 1, surrounded by a piston 18 actuated by the cylinder pressure is controlled by varying the amount of fluid trapped in a hydraulic chamber 19 above the piston. Fuel entering at 14 flows through a passage 35 to the pump pressure chamber 32 for injection through a spring-pressed injector valve 38 when the piston 18 rises, the fuel in the chamber 19 escaping through the port 14 until it is cut off by a control port 40 on the piston which is rotatable to vary the cut-off by means of a member 41 keyed to the piston at 23 and actuated by an arm 44. In a modification for multicylinder engines the control member 41 is dispensed with and each hydraulic chamber 19 is connected to ports 107, Fig. 7, through which fluid escapes in amounts controlled by a notch 112 in a rotating member 110 slidably keyed to an intermediate shaft 113 which is driven from a gear-wheel 118 through an angularly adjustable coupling 116. Longitudinal movement of member 110 by a lever 114 adjusts the notch 111 to vary the amount of fluid escaping from the hydraulic chambers at each pump stroke, and movement of sleeve 116 by a lever 120 adjusts the member 110 angularly to vary the injection timing. In a modification, Fig. 5, the pump plunger 88 is actuated by a cam 101 through a member 103 acting through a spring 105 on a piston 94 moving in the hydraulic chamber 95, the escape of fluid from which through a port 93 is controlled by the device of Fig. 7 to vary the pump stroke.
