Abstract

A gelatine derivative is prepared by reacting gelatine with phthalic, succinic or maleic anhydride or a halogen or sulphur-substituted derivative thereof. An aqueous dispersion of gelatine is preferably heated with a solution of the anhydride at a pH of 7-12, particularly at 30-50 DEG C. and a pH of 10-11. Alkali may be added during the reaction to maintain the pH. After neutralizing, the mass is set by cooling, and may be washed and dried. Degraded gelatine or glue may be used. The products are resistant to hardening by formaldehyde and chrome alum and have special viscosity characteristics. They are of use in lithographic printing, for preparing silver halide dispersing, e.g. as described in Specification 649,545, as a vehicle for silver halide or in imbibition processes in photography. In examples, gelatine dispersed in water at 40 DEG C. is brought to a pH of 10 or 9.5 with caustic soda, and phthalic anhydride, in acetone or as powder, or succinic, maleic or chlor-maleic anhydride in acetone, is added while maintaining the pH. After neutralizing with sulphuric acid, the product is gelled, shredded and optionally washed and dried.
