Abstract

Yeast is pretreated to give a product suitable for extraction of stable, biologically active, proteinaceous substances by admixing diatomaceous silica with an aqueous suspension of yeast, filtering the mixture, and drying and comminuting to a fine powder the resultant filter cake. In an example 1 gram of diatomaceous silica is added to 2 grams of a yeast suspension (dry basis) and after filtering and pulverizing the mass is dried at 35 DEG C, comminution being continued until moisture equilibrium is reached, the soluble yeast components are then extracted using a 0.1 molar solution of phosphate buffer of a pH of 7.2.
