Abstract
645,416. Automatic small arms. CHEVALLIER, A. L., and SOCHACZEWSKI, S. Dec. 11, 1947, No. 32672. [Class 119] Relates to short recoil automatic guns of the kind in which a floating inertia hood 12 sliding on the breech frame 2 unlocks and moves to open position the sliding breech bolt 29. According to the invention a spring 19 on the magazine tube 4 is compressed on barrel recoil and through a crutch 17 drives the hood rearwardly after overcoming its inertia, the hood having a pin and slot connection 13, 36 with the bolt to release the bolt lock 30 and move the block to open position. Fig. 4 shows the position of parts on short recoil of the barrel before the spring 19 has overcome the inertia of the hood 12, the hammer 57 being shown half cocked. The hood is retained in forward position by a lock 20, Fig. 1, pivoted at 21 which is released either by the recoiling breech frame or by inertia. The breech bolt 29 is opened against the action of a return spring 37 on a rod 39 which serves as an ejector. The hammer is fully cocked by a projection 41 on the firing pin 40 which is held by the bolt lock 30 when this is moved upwardly on release. The forward impact of the hood is taken by spring 19. In its rear position the hood is arrested by a leaf spring on the hood engaging a notch in the breech frame. Vertically sliding breech bolt locking blocks may replace the locking lever 30.
