Abstract
645,401. Bearings. MOWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. March 2, 1945, No. 5325. [Class 12 (i)] A race-type bearing (ball, roller, or tilting pad moving between inner and outer ring members) has the shaft-support face or the housing-engaging face, or both such faces, of such ring members formed with tangential slots so providing cantilever arms by which is effected the support of the shaft or the support of the bearing in the housing. Alternatively an intervening bush may be formed with such slots. As shown, there are provided an inner bush 8 between the shaft 1 and inner ring 6 of a ball bearing and an outer bush 9 between the outer ring 7 of the ball bearing and the housing 2, such bushes being tangentially slotted to a certain depth to provide cantilver support elements. The slots 4 may also be utilized for the passage of cooling air. One slot may be carried right through the bush which thus becomes of split-ring form facilitating assembly of the bearing in its housing and on the shaft. The races themselves may be so slotted. The slots may have frictional fibre filling to damp critical speed vibrations or rubber fillings to increase the resilience. Creeping may be avoided by providing oppositely arranged series of slots.
