Abstract

644,234. Electro-dynamometers. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. June 4, 1948, No. 15089. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XIX] A dynamometer of the type transmitting electric signals from pick-off devices 12 located at spaced points along a shaft 11 is calibrated directly to indicate torque or power instead of the phase relationship of the signals obtained. The shaft 11 with the rotors of the pick-off devices fast thereon is held stationary by means 13 and is loaded by means of a detachable scale pan 16 and weights to produce a known deflection. The stators 17 of the pick-off devices are rotated around the shaft 11 by mounting the housing 18 on a suitable bearing 19 on the shaft 11. An electric motor 20 and belt 21 are employed to rotate the housing 18, and slip rings 23 are mounted in a stationary housing 24 mounted on the shaft 11 so that in conjunction with brushes 22 and 25 the signals produced may be taken to the indicating device, not shown. To calibrate the device the shaft 11 is held stationary and the stators rotated in their housing 18 with no static load on the shaft to obtain a zero reading. Successive known deflections are applied to the shaft by means of weights placed in the removable scale pan 16, and the indicating device calibrated accordingly in terms of deflection or power. In operation the locking device 13 is released and the scale pan 16 removed. It is not necessary, however, to hold the stator carriage stationary, it may be rotated whilst measurements are being made, in the same or opposite direction to that of shaft 11, in order to extend the range of speeds over which the apparatus may be employed, and to produce accurate readings at low or zero speeds or at very high rotational speed without extending the range of frequencies at which the phase relationship of the signals may be compared accurately, and by variation of the speed of rotation of the carrier 18 the frequency of the signals from the pick-off devices may be adjusted for maximum response to changes in phase relationship.
