Abstract

644,025. Inhalations; vaporizers. GLAZER, R. D. May 27, 1947, No. 14082. [Classes 81(i) and 81(ii)] A device for generating or applying inhalants for personal use comprises a long and thin tubular container or cartridge of suitable shape and size to be held in the fingers containing an inhalant and a composition having an exothermic reaction when brought into contact with water, means being provided for applying water to said composition to permit initiation of said reaction when required. The cartridge 10 shown in Fig. 1 has a tubular body 11 of cardboard or plastic, an open end 12 screened by gauze 13, a base 14 supporting a mixture of the inhalant and exothermic material within the chamber 15. and a gripping portion 16 which does not become uncomfortably hot when the device is in use. In use a little water is placed in the open end 12. A similar cartridge (Fig. 2) is divided into chambers 17 and 22 by a wall 20 having a central aperture 21. The lower chamber 22 contains a breakable glass vial 23 of water and the upper chamber 17 the exothermic material. The inhalant may be admixed with the exothermic material or dispersed in the water. In a further modification (not shown) the outer surface of the cartridge is of aluminium foil, the inner wall is of porous material, which is impregnated with the inhalant and the other constituents of the exothermic material. A cap for the mouth and a gripping portion for the base of the cartridge is also provided. Specified inhalants are eucalyptus oil and menthol crystals; and exothermic mixtures consist of (a) cupric oxide, zinc powder and ammonium chloride, and (b) cupric oxide, cuprous oxide, aluminium powder and ammonium chloride, with or without a filler of activated carbon.
