Abstract

1431015 Mixing apparatus DENTIPRESSIONS INC 10 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 22351/73 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions A5, A6 and F1] A disposable mixing syringe assembly comprises a syringe barrel 10 containing a first component of a mixture to be formed, a sealed insert package 20 formed of puncturable material and containing a second component of the mixture sealed therein, the insert package 20 having a flanged portion 21 and a portion 22 depending therefrom in which the second component is present, flanged portion 21 serving for mounting the insert package 20 in a fixed position at an opening at one end of the barrel 10 with portion 22 within the opening, the insert package being accesible for puncturing in this position by means applied from outside the 'barrel 10 to provide for the passage of the second component into contact with and for mixing with the first component, and an outlet 11 at the opposite end of barrel 10 for egress of the mixture when formed in the barrel. The barrel 10 may be made of artificial resin, and the outlet 11 may comprise a flexible nozzle with a small orifice 12 and a removable cap 16. At its upper end, barrel 10 is formed with an elongated flange 13. The flanged portion 21 of insert 20 can be sealed and held in place on the flat top 15 of flange 13 and is made of a puncturable foil or sheet of e.g. styrene in which is formed, as by vacuum forming, a cup 22 with an annular ridge. Cup 22 is sealed, as by heat sealing with an adhesive, by a puncturable overlapping sheet 24 of e.g. aluminium or paper-backed aluminium, upon which instructions may be printed. The barrel 10 and the insert 20 is placed in an envelope ready for use. In use, a paddle-like tool (30) (Fig. 3, not shown) is pushed through the insert 20 into the barrel so that the second component flows into the barrel, the components are mixed on rotation of the tool (30). A plunger is used to expel the mixture through orifice 12, cap 16 being removed. Alternatively, the plunger may be replaced by a floating piston operated by pressure of air admitted through a control valve fixed to the end 25 of the barrel. The syringe may be used for applying a layer of dental impression material to the teeth, a layer of backing material being afterwards applied.
