Abstract

A minor proportion of a corrosion inhibitor viz. a phosphate, chromate or dichromate, is intimately embodied within a metallic coating, both the corrosion inhibitor and the coating metal being applied by spraying. The corrosion inhibitor may be applied in solution in a volatile solvent through a separate sprayer or inhibitor and coating metal may be applied together. In the latter case, mixed powders may be used or a metal powder may be coated with the inhibitor by dipping or by reaction with chromic or phosphoric acid; alternatively, the inhibitor may be contained within a metallic tube or in longitudinal recesses in a metallic rod or a rod may be coated with the inhibitor, in which case the latter may be protected by a resin sheath. Ferrous or other metals, ceramics, glass or wood may be coated with zinc, cadmium, aluminium, lead, copper, tin, nickel, stainless steel or silver or other noble metal and the inhibitor, which may comprise 0.1-20 per cent of the coating may be phosphoric acid, zinc phosphate, chromic acid, sodium, potassium, lead or zinc chromate or sodium or zinc dichromate or a mixture of these compounds.
