Abstract

1363194 Coating metals PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 3 Aug 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 36321/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division C7] An aqueous composition of pH 1-5 suitable for forming corrosion resistant, electrically insulating coatings on metal surfaces comprises chromate ions, phosphate ions, aluminium ions and a polyacrylic acid or polyacrylate thickening agent. The composition is preferably formed by rapid mixing of a solution of an aluminium acid phosphate and an aluminium chromate solution, the thickener being added simultaneously or being previously mixed with one of the other two solutions. The thickener may be added in the free-acid form or as a salt, particularly a salt of the metal forming the surface to be coated: in examples of coating compositions for use on steel the thickener is obtained by combining a commercial polyacrylic acid with iron powder or ferrous acetate. The other components are obtained by reacting aqueous phosphoric acid and chromic acid with alumina or Al(OH) 3 gel.
