[Class 56] The high temperature necessary for fining glass is produced by heating the bath internally beneath a thick and persistent layer of foam obtained by maintaining in the furnace chamber, above the refining zone, a temperature lower than that of the bath and sufficiently low to prevent bursting of the bubbles in the upper layers of the foam. The bath heaters may be electrodes, immersed resistors or flame tubes.
