Abstract

643,350. Cutting - machines. INTERNATIONAL CELLUCOTTON PRODUCTS CO. Aug. 27, 1947, No. 23756. Convention date, May 16, 1940. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group XV] In a roll of toilet or like paper having a series of transverse weakened lines formed by partially severing the paper, the weakened lines consist of alternate cuts and bonds and are made stronger adjacent the longitudinal centre line of the web than at the side edges thereof in order to facilitate severance of the sheets while enabling the web to be wound into a roll without undesired breakage. This may be effected either by making the bonds in each weakened line progressively narrower or the cuts progressively longer from the longitudinal centre line towards each edge of the web. Alternatively both the lengths of the cuts and the widths of the bonds may be varied. In the example the cuts are formed in a web 12 supplied from a parent roll several times wider than the standard size toilet roll, and the web is subsequently passed through rotary slitter knives 16, 17 to give webs of the required width. The means for forming the transverse cuts comprises an anvil roll 14 provided with channels 22 registering with perforating combs 30 carried by flanges 29 on the rims 28 of spiders or webs 27. 13 and 15 are presser or idler rolls. The teeth of the combs 30 form cuts with serrated edges in the web, and slots cut into the edge of each comb, Fig. 2 (not shown), provide the bonds joining each sheet.
