Abstract

642,645. Paving; compound slabs. BATESON, R. G. May 18, 1946, No. 15113. [Classes 87(i) and 107] A floor comprises a number of units laid in juxtaposition, each unit consisting of a slab or tile of precast concrete to the upper surface of which a layer of wood substantially one eighth of an inch thick is secured by means of a bituminous adhesive or synthetic resin adhesive which also provides a damp resisting membrane in the unit. As shown, the floor consists of a number of units laid level and a small distance apart on a sand layer 5 which is spread over a concrete foundation 6. Each unit consists of a tapered concrete slab 1, to the top surface of which an eighth of an inch thick layer of wood 3 is secured by a damp proof adhesive 4. The vee-shaped grooves left between adjacent units are nearly filled with mastic 7 and hardwood strips 8 are then pressed into the mastic to bring their top surfaces flush with those of the slabs. The mastic 7 and waterproof adhesive 4 combine to form a damp-proof layer over the whole floor and the dampproof course 9 of the wall may be extended into the mastic to complete the layer. According to the Provisional Specification the surface layer may, instead of wood. be of linoleum, rubber, hardboard, or cork.
