Abstract
642,164. Dynamometers. CURRAN, Ltd., J., and WHITEHEAD, C. D. Nov. 18, 1947, No. 30524. [Class 106 (ii)] A test bench for jet engines comprises a beam or platform arranged to support an engine so that the direction of the engine propulsive thrust is transverse to an axis about which the beam is arranged to pivot, this axis being located at one end of the beam, and means for measuring the thrust exerted by the beam located at a position displaced from the pivot axis. As shown, the bench comprises a base 2 to which is bolted a rigid column 1. A cantilever platform 5, having an upright pillar 6, is provided with slideways 41 in which are slidable bearers 40 adapted to support the engine 39. Two offset vertical bars 16, 23 secured, respectively, to the pillar 6 and the column 1, are joined hinge fashion by two pairs of flexible steel strips, whereby the platform and pillar can pivot about the column 1 about a vertical axis. An eccentric bush and bolt arrangement 21 enables the vertical axis, and consequently the level of the platform, to be adjusted. At the free end of the platform 5, near one side edge, is secured an arm 7 extending within a casing 60 in which is a thrust measuring device 54 (not shown) of the kind comprising a flexible capsule, containing liquid, communicating with a remote indicator. The device 54 includes a housing, with ball and thrust races, supported at one end in bearings 43, and joined at the other end to the arm 7, whereby thrust on the platform by the engine 39 compresses the flexible capsule. The bars 16, 23 are cut away at 60 to accommodate flexible fuel &c. pipes leading to the engine. In a modification, the vertical pivot for the platform 5 may comprise a pair of stub shafts supported by roller bearings.
